Why Good Photography Matters
Does good photography matter for your business website?
Take a quick spin around the net (maybe even to your competition’s site) and you’ll probably see the good, the bad and the ugly -- photographs that is. You know what I’m talking about, right?
The Good — Intentional business sites incorporate high-quality, professionally-edited photography. These pictures are designed to draw us in and tell a story. The photos can be purchased from stock websites, or better still, captured by a local, commercial photographer. Both options, especially the later, help you convey the emotion you want your visitors to feel and helps you keep people on your site for a longer period of time.
The Bad — Then there’s the sites that's well…. it’s as though Aunt Ginny snapped off a few with her old flip-phone. (Sorry Aunty Ginny!) Perhaps the composition is askew. Pictures are either over or under exposed. They’re grainy or pixelated, maybe the subject is blurry. Something’s amiss and your eye can tell. That all being said, you’ve seen worse photography.
The gong-show award goes to The Ugly — We’ve all seen them; they’re the pictures that make us cringe (and possibly giggle a bit). You ask, “Why would a business use these? Did they grab them from ‘the people of Walmart’ dot-com?” The pics are more than just bad, it’s bad plus more — like using pics where the subject’s head has been cropped-out.
For both the bad and the ugly, your gut reaction tells you to run far away. Bad and/or ugly pictures turn-off would-be consumers. They unconsciously convey, “This business doesn’t care about how they appear to the public. So why should I give them my business?” Contrast that with “the Good.”
Here’s the skinny: You know what looks good and what doesn’t. Design matters and so do great photographs. They can make the difference between people staying on your site and converting to customers, or not. This, of course, can impact your bottom line.
