Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. People with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder often do not feel safe. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Symptoms of PTSD can start soon after the event, but some may not begin until years after the event. PTSD is common and prevalent in our world today.
About 7-8% of the population will have PTSD at some point in their lives. Around 8 million adults have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder during a given year. About 10 out of every 100 women are diagnosed with PTSD every year and 4 out of every 10 men are diagnosed with it. This is common, and you are not alone.
There are many healthy ways to get a handle on PTSD which include mindfulness practice, peer support groups, and even animal therapy. Healing from the aftereffects of experiencing a terrifying event is possible.
