You are busy. For everything you accomplish it seems like there are 2 additions added to your To Do List. How does this happen? Why do you feel like you never catch up? The size of your Work Snowball has just grown considerably. Is it safe to say the same thing happens in your personal life?

If you are like me, you get interrupted or distracted while you try to multitask. For example, maybe you have to enter data in your computer. While working on that, you remember you forgot to make a phone call or 3 people knock on your door. While returning something you borrowed, several people stop to talk. Before you realize it, you are off track.

What can you do? The top 3 options: a) Write things down on paper (I’ve created Job Tickets on index cards and file them by priority), b) Place a note on your phone, or c) Set an alarm. What if none of these options work? Paper clutters your desk further and is easy to lose. Notes on your phone are easy to ignore. Alarms, once dismissed, are also easily forgotten. I actually do all 3 with the alarm repeating every day. It does not help if one or more tasks are daunting or unfun or the task lacks a sense of purpose.

Two options could be: a) Schedule your day the night before and be realistic, and b) at the end of the day, do one of your little tasks (“Just One More Thing”).

If you have a task that you don’t enjoy doing, set a Goal that you do not leave your seat until xyz is finished. Then have a mini celebration planned for yourself when you get it done. Some suggestions could be: take a 5-minute mental break, reward yourself with a healthy snack such as fruit, or create a list of your accomplishments and see how fast THAT list grows!

There is no fool-proof method that can cause your To Do List to shrink but try many different things to figure out what works for you.
